TechDRIVE 2024

16th September 2024

By Kat Attana

I recently had the pleasure of attending WHG’s TechDRIVE event in Melbourne, a groundbreaking gathering that showcased the latest advancements in transport technology. As a Director of TWAL, I was thrilled to be part of this dynamic event organized by WHG, a company that has set the standard in IoT, telematics, and technology solutions for over 35 years.
TechDRIVE 2024 brought together approximately 180 professionals from across the road transport industry. Held at the Campground Kitchen, the event featured an impressive array of presentations, networking opportunities, and a display of cutting-edge technology. WHG’s commitment to innovation was evident throughout the day, highlighting their leadership in integrating technology to enhance safety and efficiency on Australian roads.
One of the standout moments was Dylan Hartley’s presentation, WHG’s Director of Operations. Dylan emphasized WHG’s dedication to technological advancement and shared the exciting news of WHG’s status as an Apple Authorised Reseller.
Key Takeaways from the Event
Several critical insights emerged from TechDRIVE 2024:
1. Aging Fleet and Technological Needs: The average age of trucks in Australia stands at 15.8 years, underscoring the pressing need for modern solutions that cater to both old and new vehicles. This statistic highlights the importance of integrating new technology to improve safety and efficiency across the fleet.
2. Smart Solutions for Road Safety: I was particularly impressed by the presentation from Gavin Hill of Transport Certification Australia (TCA). His discussion on Smart On-Board Mass (OBMs) and telematics as a means to replace traditional permits was a clear demonstration of how technology can enhance road safety and streamline regulatory processes.
3. Embracing Technology for a Sustainable Future: The event underscored the role of new technologies in driving efficiency and reducing emissions. By embracing these advancements, we can achieve better outcomes for both the environment and our customers.
A significant highlight of the event was the presentation by Naomi Frauenfelder, CEO of Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds (HHTS) and a valued partner of TWAL. Naomi’s passionate talk shed light on the crucial issue of psychological safety in the transport and logistics industry.
She highlighted the results of a survey indicating that many truck drivers struggle with issues such as poor nutrition, physical fitness, and loneliness. Naomi shared how HHTS is making a difference through their mental health toolbox talks, mobile app, and various support initiatives.
Her organization’s commitment to improving psychological wellbeing is a testament to the broader impact of technology and innovation in creating a safer, more supportive environment for all industry professionals. Naomi’s work aligns perfectly with TWAL’s mission to foster a healthier and more connected transport community.
As we move forward, it is clear that embracing technology will be key to driving efficiency, enhancing safety, and reducing our environmental impact.
Thank you to WHG for hosting such an inspiring event and to all the professionals who attended and contributed to the discussions. A special thanks to Naomi Frauenfelder and HHTS for their vital work in advancing mental health and wellbeing in our industry.
